Cotman Residence

Location: Leavenworth, WA
Builder: Owner built

This home was lovingly built by the owners over the course of several years. Much of the lumber used for finished surfaces including the siding, flooring, and trim was milled on the property, dictating a slow and deliberate timeline. Tucked into a hillside with expansive views, the home is close to Leavenworth yet invisible until you are coming up the driveway. After much time spent on site selecting the location and orientation, the key spaces in the home- open kitchen and living room, large covered deck, and primary bedroom- were stepped along a ribbon of windows to direct views to the mountains. You enter at the covered deck, which projects out past the kitchen to allow for both shelter and view. The window wall starts from the connection to the deck and continues unbroken around the corner of the bedroom. Each room has a defined volume that interacts with those around it to create a flowing and connected space. A small footprint became a generous space.
